Ten Tips if your Dog is a Fussy Eater

Not all dogs feel the same way about food. Some “live to eat”, while others simply “eat to live”! Labradors are often in the first camp, but many other breeds—especially smaller dogs—can be naturally less enthusiastic at mealtimes. And sometimes, despite the best intentions, we accidentally create fussy eaters by sharing the good stuff. After all, who wouldn’t choose steak or a bite of bacon from your plate over their (perfectly healthy) dog food?

If you’ve got a fussy dog at home, these tips can help:

1.  Start with a high-quality kibble

Check the label and look for named meats (not by-products) in the first ingredients. Foods made with quality meat or fish
plus fruits and veggies are often more palatable than formulas heavy in by-products and grains. If you’re looking for highly palatable options, try GO! Solutions or  NOW FRESH SMALL BREED dog foods.

2.  Add a splash of warm water

Warm water helps release aromas and can make kibble more appealing. The Good Gravy line from NOW Fresh is designed for this – add a little warm water to create a tasty, hydrating gravy.

3.  Mix in a spoonful of wet food

Wet food is highly palatable so it’s great for fussy eaters or older dogs who are losing their appetites. Just a spoonful or two mixed in with their kibble will entice the fussiest of dogs to eat.  We have several brands of wet food available in different flavours and textures. Note: Cats, on the other hand, generally prefer not to mix the texture of wet food with their biscuits – separate meals are usually better for them!

4.  Try simple toppers

Add a couple of spoons of yoghurt, sardines, mackerel, or vegetables. Mix it through, or put the topper in first and place
kibble on top.

5.  Keep mealtimes short and consistent

If your dog won’t eat after 10–15 minutes, pick the bowl up and try again at the next scheduled meal. A consistent routine
can help appetite and reduce grazing.

6.  Rotate proteins (slowly)

Next bag, choose a different meat or fish protein. Always transition gradually over several meals. If you use a simple formula (limited ingredient or sensitive stomach), rotation can be easier.  GO! Sensitivities range or GO! Skin + Coat Care range are excellent choices for easy rotation.

7.  Make it a little more interactive

Some dogs will eat from your hand first, then transition back to a bowl. Others respond well to kibble scattered on the ground (supervised) to activate natural foraging instincts.

8.  Check you’re not overfeeding

Feeding slightly less can help build appetite for the next meal. Many dogs are overfed, and with high-quality food you may need to feed less than you would with lower-quality options.

9.  Go easy on treats

Too many treats can spoil appetite. Keep treats minimal so your dog is genuinely hungry at meal

10. Keep the vibe positive

Make mealtimes calm and pleasant. A little encouragement help, but stress does not.

What The Pets Have To Say...

"15 years old and doing great!"

I thought you might be interested in photos of Blaine, Ch Blainefield of Gartferry. He is now 15 years old, still enjoying life, even though he has slowed down and got a bit of arthritis in his front leg. He really enjoys playing with Keilah his gg niece, I think it keeps him young.

I think he is doing great, and has been fed on GO! Sensitivity + Shine.

Patricia, Gartferry Cairns

"I TRIED SIX DIFFERENT BRANDS, AND HE PREFERS NOW!"

I am writing to you today to say thank you for making a wonderful healthy dog food.

I received a sample of your new NOW Fresh Small Breed dog food. I have tried about 6 different brands and my Shih Tzu, Charlie, would not eat them unless I added something to them. I opened the NOW Fresh and he finished all the food in his bowl – and was looking for more! He now can’t wait until his next meal.

Thank you so much for making myself and Charlie happy!

"Real chunks of veggies, turkey, and trout!"

Hi there, my name is Barley. My humans rescued me about two years ago. You can imagine how scared I was when they brought me home. I hid a lot and didn’t have much of appetite – that was until they offered me GO! Fit + Free Chicken Turkey Trout Stew. It was just the comfort food I needed with real chunks of veggies, turkey, and trout. I loved GO! so much that my humans started feeding me the GO! Fit + Free Chicken Turkey Duck kibble too. Now I am a happy and healthy boy!

"I couldn't be happier with this food."

I have been fostering cats and kittens for 5 years. Many come in with poor health, being either under weight, have skin and eye infections, vomiting and diarrhea. To help fast track each rescue back to good health a diet high in nutrients, with zero artificial additives and is grain free is essential, and the NOW Fresh range offers that. The pre- and probiotics make all the difference in supporting their digestion and the omega oils provide just what they need to develop their immune systems, resulting in soft, glossy coats, healthy skin and bright and alert animals. I couldn’t be happier with this food.

"He actually eats it!"

Charlie says THANK YOU!!

He is loving the Go! Sensitivity + Shine Grain Free Freshwater Trout + Salmon Pate. He actually eats it, not just licks like he used to do with supermarket brands. Can’t wait to try him on the Go! Fit + Free Grain Free Chicken Turkey Duck Pate and the Go! Sensitivity + Shine Grain Free Duck Pate!!

"Folly overcame food intolerance on GO! and NOW Fresh"

My young rescue dog Folly had a terrible worm burden as a puppy and as such has had problems with food tolerance. I am extremely fussy about what my dogs are fed, and as she is unable to tolerate raw feeding, I needed to find a kibble that was top of the range. She has done extremely well on several of the GO! and NOW Fresh products and I highly recommend them.

"It is really good to have such high quality cat foods to choose from."

Our boy ‘Bumble’ is a rehouse cat. He came to us having had some health issues including crystals. He eats both NOW Fresh and GO! cat biscuits as well as the GO! canned foods, which he has taken to with gusto! It is really good to have such high quality cat foods to choose from. I love that I can feed both biscuits and canned foods offering high quality ingredients and he is thriving ! Bumble thanks you.

"They can't get enough of it!"

Bandit loved the sample and so we went and tracked down the big bag of NOW Fresh Large Breed Puppy from Nose To Tail in Albany and now both Bailey and Bandit are on that. Both dogs have had significant improvement in their coats, energy levels and general well-being. Bailey is a new dog: full of beans, fluffy, soft, playful and eating like a little piglet. And best of all no vomiting her food up. Bandit is thriving on the NOW Fresh: he is loving meal times and scoffing it all up along with a much shinier black coat and loads of energy.

"On his 48th can and he LOVES it!"

We have a Maine Coon cross named Azzie and were looking for the perfect pet food to feed him. He had been eating supermarket food and was putting on weight, a trend we were very keen to reverse! He is on to his 48th can of Petcurean GO! FIT + FREE Grain Free Chicken, Turkey + Duck Pâté and he loves it! It didn’t take long to get him used to the new flavour/texture either which can be a challenge when changing foods.

Azzie

"He loves the taste!"

I wanted to start my kitten Diego out on the best kind of food and with my dog already doing so well on NOW Fresh dog food, it was a no-brainer to use the same range for cats. He loves the taste of the NOW Fresh Kitten recipe and is bright, bouncy and has a beautiful shiny coat too. It feels so good feeding my pets a food that I feel confident offers only the best for them.
